Our Camping Cats And Finding The Right Cat Playpen

When we set off full time rving, we knew our cats were gonna be trouble...they usually are anyway, but this was going to be a challenge. We had much to learn about specific rv cat needs, and discovered quickly we needed to find the right outdoor cat enclosure for our camping lifestyle. It had to be compact, portable, lightweight...and have plenty of room for one average size cat and one large "cow cat," as you see in the photo...plus a litterbox.

At the same time, we wanted it to be sturdy for their safety, as well as stand up to the weather. We searched high and low for the "perfect" cat house...but just like Goldilocks, one was too small, one was too big...but finally we found the one that was "just right."

We Discovered The Ultimate Outdoor Cat Habitat For Camping

Why We Chose This Portable Folding Pet Playpen

There are many reasons why this portable pet play pen met our needs. Here is a summary for you to consider...we've listed every reason under the sun, and asked the cats for input, too!

QUICK SET-UP TIME - These set up in a second...no kidding! A little stiffer at first, but now I can open it with one arm, shake it into shape, while holding a fidgeting feline in the other. With rving, we need to be able to pop up this cat house and take it down very fast, as we travel from place to place.

ULTIMATE PORTABILITY - These collapsible pet pens lie flat as a pancake, and slip right into a travel bag (included with purchase). The bag has handles as well, so you can bring the pen with you anywhere (you might want to bring your cats, too...but when ours act up, I tell them we might not bring them, but we will take their house along).

DURABILITY - If you are like us, when you think "zippers" you think of them breaking, getting stuck, splitting apart...basically, irreparable damage and your money down the drain. We can state that we use this enclosure all of the time...two cats, in and out, in and out...and the durable, rugged zipper keeps on going strong. You should note that we leave ours out in the weather, too, and it is still working just fine.

EXTREMELY VERSATILE - First, note that there are 2 side doors and one top door. For us, it is more convenient putting them in through the top. But these play yards are also perfect for in the home as well. You can leave one door unzipped so they can come and go as they please. In our camper, sometimes we have to do a lot of bringing things in and out. During these times we can put the kitties in their house so they won't run out. If the weather is poor outside, we can set it up in the camper while we have the rv door open. Also, note in the picture below that we simply turn them over if they got drizzled on...but that is the great thing...if it is drizzling, you can flip it over, put a blanket on the bottom, and a light rain won't bother them a bit.

One Tip: What About Large Size Outdoor Cat Enclosures?

The only regret we made, and it was small, was purchasing a large playpen. As it turns out, the diameter on medium or large is almost identical, it is merely the height that changes. We paid almost double the money for an extra foot of height, that our cats could truly care less about. In fact, I think they prefer lower ceilings (like they enjoy going inside paper bags), so we might have made a small error...and these cats hold a grudge.

A large pen might be great if using for a dog, but as far as felines are concerned, if we were to buy a new one (and we don't need to, because they are so rugged!), we would go with the medium size, at half the cost.

Regardless, we couldn't be happier with our investment...and we're sure you will be, too! They also make great gifts for rv owners, too!

Thank you for your nice comments, Skarlet and Stephanie...we cat owners know that cats set the rules, not us. Cannot say how much we've spent on things that the cats reject. Wanted to share a product our cats truly enjoy!

These cat enclosures sound great! I think even my finicky cat might like to lounge around in one at a campground! Welcome to HubPages!

Thank you for commenting, Skarlet! They are pretty fun to watch. They do these odd, snuggling things all of the time. Our cats hate to ride in cars, too...but oddly enough, they are ok riding in the motorhome...maybe you should get a motorhome for your cats? haha
